The Kindle DX can read PDF files, however the Kindle 1 and the Kindle 2 need to have the PDF files converted using the MobiePockets converter before it can be viewable.

Using PDF eBooks with the Kindle Reader
In addition to Kindle Formated content, you can convert your personal documents to Kindle formated. If you have files formatted as text, Microsoft Word, HTML, PDF, or image files like GIF or JPEG, you can e-mail the files as attachments to your Kindle e-mail address. Amazon will convert the files if necessary and send them back to your computer for free or wirelessly to your Kindle for a small fee, whichever you prefer. Currently, the conversion of PDF documents is an experimental feature. Some complex PDF files might not format correctly on your Kindle. For more information on transferring, converting, and e-mailing your personal documents to Amazon please visit Amazon.com.

Great news for Kindle owners.  The new Kindle 3 reads PDF files natively.  You no longer need to convert the PDF eBooks to be viewable on the Kindle.
