Excerpt: In the comprehensive revision of the national income and product accounts (NIPA?s) that was released in January 1996, BEA introduced the use of quality adjusted price indexes for the calculation of real exports and imports of semiconductors. The improved measurement of real output and prices of hightech goods through expanded use of quality adjusted price indexes is part of BEA?s strategic plan to improve the quality of its economic accounts (see the box ?Measurement of Real Output and Prices for HighTech Goods?). The quality adjusted price indexes for semiconductors, which are based on indexes for several types of memory chips and of microprocessors, were incorporated into the estimates of exports and imports beginning with 1981.1...
