The Role of Public Libraries in the Media Society : Abstract

By Ang, Conny

Description
Professional Publication

Excerpt
Abstract: New media, information and communications technology are developing at breathtaking speed. Linked to this, a dramatic change is taking place in society and the world of work. This affects us as individuals and our libraries. The society of the future will be marked by multimedia communication, decentralisation and deregulation. This will empower individuals to shape their own lives. However, we will also be confronted with an enormous increase in the amount of information available. The media and IT markets are already highly competitive. This gives public libraries an opportunity to act as experts in the sifting of relevant information. There is a demand for individual services and human competencies combined with professional skills in the use of both new and conventional media.
